Various Doll Types

There are many different types of dolls and the materials are just as diverse. The most popular type of doll material is Porcelain.  The Porcelain dolls have such a great vintage look especially the Victorian Dolls. Porcelain has different categories; they are Hard Paste, Soft Paste and Bone China. Early Porcelain dolls were made with hard and soft paste and most dolls are made from Bone China.  Bisque is a form of porcelain; it is commonly referred to as plain porcelain without the glaze. The dolls that are made from this material are not used for dolls to play with, the material is very fragile.

Celluloid dolls were first made in 1856, the material is very easy to mold and original was created as a replacement for Ivory. This material is very flammable so they stopped making them. These dolls are hard to come by the only object that Celluloid is used for are table tennis balls. Composition is made basically of sawdust and glue. It is a bit stronger than Paper Mache and it was mostly used in creating the head of the dolls because it is very easy to mold.

The United Federation of Doll Clubs, hard plastic dolls were created after the Second World War The material of hard plastic gives the dolls more definition of the features. These dolls were most popular in the 1940’s and 50’s and then have most recently in the past 20 years or so have come back.

Paper Mache is a light material that is made from paper and paste. The Paper Mache was mainly used in molding of the dolls face and head. German Doll makers fancied these materials. Vinyl is a resin based material that was introduced in the 50’s; this material is unbreakable and soft to touch. Wood dolls were the very first material used in doll making. This practice is not really used, only mainly used in limited editions made for doll collectors.
